How I got 12 Breathtaking Photos of the Floods in Venice, Italy.
"It was a series of risks that led me to this beautiful collection..."
It was roughly midnight when I heard the flood sirens going off on the The Lido (the island I stayed at, just off the coast of Venice). It was a dangerous decision, but I knew it was an rare opportunity for me to get some incredible shots; so I grabbed my camera and ran out to catch the next water bus and headed to Venice.
When I got on the boat, I met a lovely Venetian women that could speak English. After talking for a while, she offered to show me around the city. When we arrived, the entire dock was submerged in water. The second I stepped out of the boat, I was knee deep in the flood waters. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE! These breathtaking photographs were taken right in San Marco Square were the boat dropped us off.
It was a series of risks that led me to this beautiful collection of images. I decided to use student loans to pay for this entire trip. I left the hotel by myself in the middle of the night, to go to a city full of dark alleyways with no police. I dared to start a conversation with a local women, that I assumed only spoke Italian. And then I let her lead the way, hoping she had good intentions. Risky decisions, but it all worked out!
Moral of the story: Don't let the fear of taking risks stop you from doing incredible things. Magic happens when you step out of your comfort zone.
